About the Role

Surge is a growing software and data company serving the wholesale lending space. We recently entered a new chapter under new ownership, and we are building the team that takes us through our next phase of growth. We are hiring a Controller to own our accounting function and be a true partner in running the business.

Reporting directly to the CEO, this person owns the monthly close and the integrity of our financial reporting, and helps run the company day to day: board reporting, governance and compliance, and the AI initiatives that are reshaping how a finance function works.

We are a remote team. The CEO works out of the Kiln in Holladay, Utah, and candidates in the Salt Lake area are a plus, though not required.

What You Will Own

Accounting and Monthly Close

• Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, with clean checklists for each
• Run the day-to-day accounting: revenue, AP, AR, GL, and payroll
• Produce complete, accurate, and timely financial statements
• Own the relationships with our audit, tax, and accounting partners

Controls, Governance, and Compliance

• Roll out key financial controls in phases as we scale
• Strengthen controls across cash, revenue, and payroll
• Build and maintain a complete, accurate compliance calendar
• Stay ahead of the requirements that come with operating in the lending space
• Take ownership of our internal and external audit processes

Reporting, Budget, and Cash

• Set the format for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting to management & the Board
• Define the KPIs that matter (revenue, EBITDA, margin) and report against plan
• Own the annual budget and measure performance against it in detail
• Maintain short-term cash forecasting, including cash burn

AI and Process Improvement

• Help lead AI initiatives across finance and the broader business
• Put efficient accounting and reporting tools in place to support our key processes
• Improve accuracy, visibility, and speed across our financial workflows
• Build disciplined, auditable, repeatable processes that scale with us

What We Are Looking For

• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
• CPA strongly preferred
• A track record of owning the monthly close
• Strong GAAP knowledge and hands-on accounting skills
• Big Four experience and time at a technology company or startup are strongly preferred
• Comfort with modern finance tools and a real appetite for AI driven workflows
• Highly organized with excellent follow through
